If so chances are your machine is one of the millions machines infected with what is commonly called adware or spyware. Unscrupulous software companies have created software that they are able to load without your knowledge onto your personal computer. The purpose of this software is to track your web browsing habits and report the data to a central location. This is a big intrusion into your privacy and it affects your computers performance in terrible ways.

How did I get infected?

Your machine can get infected many ways. The most common method is you or someone in your household installed software on the machine that included the spyware. These software packages could be music sharing programs, games, clocks, screen savers. Usually the software will be "free" and provide no real value. If the person installing the software were to actually read the license agreement during installation the spyware is usually revealed and the installer is asked to agree to its use.

Another method of installation is you or someone in your household clicked on a pop up box that appeared when you were using the internet. Never click on the Yes or No or anywhere in the box that the box is encouraging you to click. You should always click on the little X at the top right corner of the box, to close it without saying Yes, No or anything. ( see example). You should install a alternate browser or a pop blocking toolbar such as the google toobar.

What do we do?

Via a telephone consultation we make a determination of whether or not your problem is indeed a spyware infection. We then schedule a mutually convenient time for us to come to your location ( limited area served) and remove the spyware and give you a brief lesson in safe computing.

How much does it cost?

Within the limited service area the charge for Spyware removal is $95 for a maximum of two hours of time. Sometimes if your machine is "slow" or the infection is massive it may take more than two hours. You will be alerted at the two hour mark and ask to make the decision of continuing the service call at a hourly rate of $55 a hour. Our fee is for the spyware removal only other computer related services must be separately discussed

We may suggest a software purchase to prevent further problems, such as a virus scanners or personal firewall. This is of no monetary benefit to us, it is only to prevent your machines reinfection.

Can I fix it myself?

Sure you can, There are many sites on the internet that detail how to remove the spyware but we have done many many removals and we can usually do a much more complete job. There are many tools available that allows you to scan your computer, some of the best are:

One thing to keep in mind, some of the worst types of spyware/adware will reappear after rebooting your machine. Even if the cleaner software says that it is completely removed. This is the hardest type of infection to clear up. You must run the cleaning program multiple times and reboot after each run.
